How do I replace a recessed medicine cabinet with a flat mirror?

I have removed the small medicine cabinet. Do I need to fill in the empty space, or will the large mirror be placed on top of the wall and former cabinet area all together?

you could put the mirror in and then a few shelves to fit across or put the mirror in a frame over the recessed area …does the mirror FIT inside the recessed area?

You should get a piece of insulation and fill the existing space before hanging the mirror. This will keep the mirror from sweating on the backside during all those hot showers.

Even after filling the void with insulation, I would certainly place a piece of drywall over the hole. It’s too bad you couldn’t have attached the new mirror to the old medicine cabinet. You would have still had the storage. Even if the hinge made the mirror off-set slightly.
Just a thought.
I have learned that repairing one’s home properly (never cut corners) is the most economical and practical method. Rental home is an entirely different matter.
