John asked:

How does long lasting flea medicine ( like Advantage) kill the fleas and their eggs for a month without hurting the dog or cat?
If I haven’t used this on my dog before I wouldn’t have a box that has directions inside.

read the instructions. the skin absorbs the medicine. it attacks the fleas and their eggs nervous system.

Add : the person asking the question, wants to know how the medicine works. How it kills the fleas. Not how to use it.
And when using spot on treatments you don’t bath the dog for 48 hours before and after. This is why they say no swimming and do not get wet. If you bathe them during these 2 times it does not work. Plus when you bathe or get them wet it is simply washing off the medicine. The skin has not had time to absorb the medicine.

Not sure really but I would bathe the dog first in Dawn dishwashing liquid blue orginial then when the dog is dry put on the advantage. If you already applied the advantage wait until you can give the dog a bath then bath him in Dawn

These products are applied to the animal’s skin and they travel throughout the body subcutaneously (under the skin) and kill fleas, ticks and eggs. The medication is strong enough to kill the parasite but generally too weak to harm the host. So, they are pretty safe, and necessary for the prevention of diseases, but should not be applied to sick animals because there is slight a possibility of this aggravating an already compromised immune system. And yes, read the label because all flea and tick products are different (some only sterilize the flea, etc) and only suitable for the labeled species.

Wash the dog with Prell shampoo, let it sit on 5 - 10 minutes. Then follow directions with Advantage. The problem with fleas is that only about 25% are on the dog. The rest are in your house. They only stay on the dog to feed than jump off onto your carpet, couch, bed etc. You got to “bomb” the house at least twice, right away and then a few weeks later. First one kills anything that has hatched but not the eggs. Second one gets the eggs that have now hatched.
